The Turning of the Wheel - The Spiritual Significance of the Autumn Equinox (Mabon)

The Autumn Equinox, also called Mabon, marks a moment of equilibrium: day and night are equal in length. Spiritually, this is a sacred invitation to pause and reflect. It is both a harvest festival and a reminder that balance is fleeting, yet vital. We are asked to honor our abundance, release what no longer serves, and prepare to journey inward as the days grow shorter.

This season whispers-- “Gather, give thanks, and let go.”

🍎 Spiritual Tips for the Autumn Equinox

Practice gratitude: Write down what you’ve harvested this year (big or small).

Honor balance: Spend time outdoors at dawn or dusk to reflect on the equal dance of light and dark.

Create a seasonal altar: Decorate with apples, corn, acorns, leaves, or candles in earthy tones.

Release gently: Write down what you’re ready to let go of and symbolically bury it in soil or beneath a tree.

Share abundance: Donate food, clothing, or your time to extend the harvest spirit.

🔥 Ritual: “The Offering of Balance”

Light two candles—one white (light) and one black (shadow).

Place an apple between them as a symbol of abundance and balance.

Speak aloud what you are grateful for (to honor the harvest).

Then, speak what you are ready to release (to honor the coming dark).

Cut the apple in half horizontally—revealing the hidden star within. Eat one half in gratitude, and bury the other half outside as an offering back to the Earth.

🌬️ Breathing Exercise: “Equal Breath”

Inhale for a count of 4.

Hold for 4

Exhale for 4

Hold for 4
Repeat for several cycles to center yourself in balance, mirroring the equinox energy.

🧘 Mini Meditation

Close your eyes and imagine standing in a golden autumn field at sunset. The warmth of the sun kisses your skin, while cool shadows stretch across the earth. With each breath, feel the light and dark within you finding balance—no part of you is rejected, all is honored. Whisper to yourself: “I am whole in balance.”

✍️ Journal Prompt

“What am I ready to release with gratitude, and what balance do I wish to cultivate as I step into this new season?”

🌟 Mantra / Affirmation

“I honor the balance of light and shadow within me. With gratitude, I release. With trust, I receive.”

✨ This equinox reminds us that life is cyclical. Every harvest requires letting go, every ending brings a new beginning. By aligning with this sacred turning of the year, we honor both our abundance and our shadows, stepping gracefully into the flow of the seasons.
